Peaceful Place

I was wondering, and it’s a good thing to wonder, does creating a peaceful place start within ourselves or our surroundings? In my experience most people, including myself can experience one as being more important than the other. Most people enjoy the increasing feelings of peace within and also being in a peaceful place. I think they complement each other. Certainly by taking my attention to the breath relaxing more and more on each out breath I feel more and more peace deep within. In this way I can lower my blood pressure, slow my heart rate, improve my state of mind and become more positive.

I also experience peace within when I spend time in nature, I notice this especially when I am in woodland, on hills or mountains or near water. A newborn, a sunset or moonlit sky also bring about deep feelings of joy and peace for me and I often use these experiences as visualizations and have noticed the same above mentioned benefits. This is because the unconscious mind often does not know the difference between what is actually occurring and a real good visualisation, how amazing is that?

Creating a peaceful home can take up an entire home and gardens, or one room, or part of a room, it’s what is appropriate for you. In creating a peaceful place no matter how big or small I am mindful it should appeal to all of my senses . First of all remove any clutter and have a clean sweep. Next create a blank back drop using soothing colours such as ivory, pale green or other pastel colours for the walls, there is no right or wrong here just use the colours you find most relaxing.

Placing pebbles, sea shells and objects of beauty around contributes to the relaxation experience. If you are lucky enough to create a quiet home that is great, but sometimes I use gentle music to enhance my experience. Burning incense can be cleansing and relaxing and anchors me in to becoming mindful of my breath which in turn deepens my relaxation experience. Candles can create a gentle ambience adding to the peaceful haven and the more time I spend around peaceful places the better my life works and as soon as I find myself feeling stressed I bring to mind my peaceful place (remember the unconscious mind doesn’t always know the difference between what is actually occurring and a powerful visualisation) and sooner rather than later that familiar peaceful feeling returns, I feel balanced, powerful and calm enough can carry on…
